The Lane Of The Hopeful Heart, built in the summer of 1923, no longer exists. I took this picture in early 2012 shortly before the last houses were destroyed. The women in this picture are the wives and daughters of the demolition men. They pick through the debris for anything that might be re-used or sold. Of course, I’m a vulture too — searching for pictures in the rubble … looking for some hope on this now-ironically named lane — seeking assurance that almost a hundred years of community has not been erased without trace or record.
